In My Dreams I Hold A Knife is a story that, on the surface, seems to echo a lot of the college thrillers that have come out recently. A group of friends returns to attend Homecoming ten years after one of them was murdered. Secrets abound, tensions run high, and a killer is unmasked. Being that the plot is somewhat unoriginal, I was not expecting to like this book as much as I did. I was expecting a college thriller on par with Never Saw Me Coming, which I didn’t hate but didn’t draw me in. It was a shock to me that I read this book in just over 24 hours, coming back to it every spare chance I had. It had imperfect characters who each had complex inner motivations, which a lot of thrillers seem to lack. None of the characters were good people, but I still felt myself care about each of them. It had a little bit of tug on your heartstrings romance. All in all, the writing really drew me back into college. It made me remember as the author states, all the freedom with none of the responsibility.
I’ll admit, however, that I am not without bias. From the first few pages, it was clear that the author attended my alma mater, even though the college had been renamed and moved across the country. I felt like I was really able to connect with the campus that she was describing because of that. Other readers may not feel that same connection to the book that I do.
I will say no more as I fear that I would give away pieces if I delved any deeper into why I loved this book. All I will say is, you should definitely give it a shot, I doubt you’ll be disappointed.
